Greg's journey

After being diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease in 1993, I spent the next 7 years slowly watching my health diminish. Playing football in high school and in college I felt my physique was strong enough to support the pain I would endure in the upcoming years but I was wrong. Then life changed again as I became a parent to two boys. My attention shifted from making healthy decisions to being a father. Between 2000 and 2003, my weight reached 300 pounds. I walked with a slight bend and had to sit down every 5 to 10 minutes because of pain and exhaustion. Around this time my doctor also informed me I was eligible for Spinal Fusion surgery.
One day while walking, my leg and foot gave out and I fell down when crossing the street. This was the exact moment I knew I needed to make changes with my health.
I started researching exercises that would strengthen my body for the journey I was about to begin. First with my core, then my legs and then my upper body. I hesitate to think what my life would have been like if I hadn’t made these choices. Exercising, changing my eating habits and making better decisions for my future made a huge impact. The exercise didn’t reverse my condition it made me strong enough to live with it.
In 2012 I looked back at all that I learned, everything I was going through and thought if I can do this for myself I can help others. People started to ask me for exercises and help with their training. “How did you lose all that weight” or “you really changed your appearance” are things I heard often. Motivated and inspired I decided to become a Certified Personal Trainer the same year.
In August 2015, after years of rebuilding my health, I could no longer delay the inevitable - I had surgery. The procedure was called Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) It was extensive and took 6 screws, 5 months of recovery and 5 weeks of rehabilitation. I stand today figuratively and literally a stronger person. The neurosurgeon who performed the surgery said the majority of people he performs the surgery on are fragile, out of shape and have other existing health issues such as being overweight, diabetes and low to no muscle strength. He stated that my dedication to bettering myself in the years before surgery was key and he wished all his patients could subscribe to the same philosophy.
I know about perseverance, motivation, and will. I know about obstacles. I know about goals.
Considering what I've been through, I know also about obstacles and excuses. What I know the most - I am the Personal Trainer for you!
